The 25th Annual Mille Lacs Crossing

Not too many other windsurfing events in North America have had the longevity of The Mille Lacs Crossing held annualy in Garrison, Minnesota on Lake Mille Lacs. 'The Crossing' as its become better know as, is an all out drag race across this vast lake that stretches 18 miles at her longest point. This event is unique in so many ways that you just have to experience it first hand to appreciate all of the hard work that countless volunteers put into.
The schedule consists of course racing on Friday afternoon followed by a welcoming party at one of the local pubs later in the evening. Saturday and Sunday are designated as 'crossing' days with usually the best wind day winning over. Mother Mille Lacs can be calm and peaceful or knarly and mean with waves 8' plus, so strategy is one of the biggest keys to a successful crossing. Arriving at the skippers meeting on Saturday already gets the fire burning inside with anticipation of the fun day ahead. When we arrive at our designated start area, everyone's eager to get on the water to test the winds, then the mind game begins as to what sail board combo should I take. One of the biggest factors in deciding what to take boils down to: Do you want to try and win? Or, do you want to just make it accross the lake? As in previous years, I'll be making those same decisions just prior to leaving for the start line.
We have made many great friendships over the years at this event, and off all the events we attend over the course of the year, The Mille Lacs Crossing holds a special place in our hearts.

We'll be updating from the USA as to our progress with pictures and stories of our adventures.

Wish us luck smiley

Surfy, doing the Crossing is about the same as jumping from a high rock...you should have no problem at all!!

I remember that morning we took that picture. We had breakfast right across the lake and watched the sun rise and it was a beautiful, warm day - but no wind.
